The Ultimate Guide to the STAR Method

Learn how to structure your answers perfectly for Situation, Task, Action, and Result.

The STAR method is the gold standard for answering behavioral interview questions. When an interviewer asks, "Tell me about a time you...", they are specifically looking for a structured story.

What does STAR stand for?

  • Situation: Set the scene. Give the necessary details of your example.
  • Task: Describe what your specific responsibility was in that situation.
  • Action: Explain exactly what steps YOU took to address it. (Don't say "we").
  • Result: Share what outcomes your actions achieved. Use data and numbers if possible!

Pro Tip: Most candidates spend 80% of their time explaining the Situation and Task, and rush through the Result. Flip that. Spend the majority of your time talking about your Actions and the positive Results!
